Bird flu continues to cause significant damage to Poland's poultry industry, leading to a sharp increase in egg prices and a decrease in their availability on the market. The loss of millions of laying hens has been a serious blow to Polish farmers, who felt the effects of the virus in late 2024 and early 2025.
According to Polish publication TVP Info, from October to December 2024, Poland lost about 1.7 million laying hens, and in 2025, five large poultry farms were closed due to bird flu, leading to the destruction of more than 4.3 million chickens. Such massive losses have had a major impact on egg production, which is felt on store shelves.
Katarzyna Gawronska, director of the National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers in Poland, said that this situation will lead to a significant decrease in the supply of eggs. It is predicted that in the spring of 2025 there could be 20% less eggs than in the same period last year, especially during the Easter period, when demand for eggs traditionally increases.
One of the reasons for this shortage is the destruction of birds in the largest regions of Poland specializing in egg production, such as central and western Greater Poland and northern Mazovia. The spread of the virus has not only destroyed large flocks, but also made it difficult to resume production on farms that had previously successfully coped with bird flu. The appearance of the virus on neighboring farms has made it impossible to resume egg production.
These circumstances are causing concern among consumers and entrepreneurs, as an increase in egg prices is already observed on the market. In addition, poultry producers are expected to be forced to raise prices, which will further affect the cost of eggs.
In the context of the unstable situation on the Polish poultry market, in particular due to bird flu, consumers are already experiencing product shortages, and farmers are trying to adapt to new challenges caused by the epidemic.
