A noticeable decrease in greenhouse tomato prices is observed in Ukraine. This trend is due to an increase in the harvest volumes in stationary greenhouse farms across the country, as well as limited consumer demand. As a result, product prices are gradually decreasing, creating additional pressure on the market.
According to analysts from the EastFruit project, in early May, Ukrainian greenhouse plants are selling tomatoes within 70–100 hryvnias per kilogram (1.68–2.40 USD). This is approximately 18% cheaper compared to the price level at the end of the previous working week, which indicates a fairly rapid adjustment in the cost of products.
However, despite the decrease, the current price level is still higher than last year: 15% more expensive than in the same period in 2024. This is explained by the general increase in the cost of growing vegetables, including energy, logistics and fertilizer costs. At the same time, the domestic market is not currently showing increased demand, which limits the potential for price growth.
According to market participants, the supply of Ukrainian tomatoes continues to grow, as new greenhouse farms join the active sales season every day. This intensifies competition in the market, especially considering that imported supplies of tomatoes also remain stable, adding to the total supply.
Producers note that if the current sales rates are maintained, they may have to reconsider prices downwards again. The main goal is to avoid oversaturation of warehouses with unsold products, which could lead to even greater losses in the greenhouse sector.
In the current situation, farmers hope for increased consumer demand in the coming weeks, as well as the possibility of expanding sales channels - in particular through exports. However, for now, greenhouse tomato prices remain under pressure, and the market is looking for a new balance between supply and demand.
