  • Ukraine launches state register of GMOs: a new step towards biosafety and European integration
    Опубликовано: 2025-04-21 18:03:10

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved Resolution No. 451, which provides for the creation of a full-fledged state register of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The document was initiated by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, which will also become the holder, administrator and owner of the information contained in the new system.

Minister of Agrarian Policy Vitaly Koval emphasized that the introduction of the register will be an important step in regulating the circulation of GMOs in Ukraine. According to him, the system will streamline accounting, ensure effective monitoring, and guarantee the storage and transparent dissemination of data on genetically modified organisms used or registered in the country.

The register is scheduled to be launched in September 2026 - that is when the resolution will come into force in accordance with the provisions of the Law of Ukraine "On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control over the Placement on the Market of Genetically Modified Organisms and Products." This law, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on August 23, 2023 (No. 3339-IX), became the basis for harmonizing the Ukrainian biosafety system with European standards.

The creation of the register is of not only technical but also strategic importance. It is expected that the new system will contribute to strengthening state control over GMOs, increase consumer confidence in Ukrainian products, and reduce risks to human health and the environment. This will also allow more effectively to combat the illegal circulation of modified organisms and ensure transparency in the field of biotechnology.

The register will contain detailed data on each GMO, including: the name of the organism, the source of genetic modification, the scientific and Ukrainian names of the species, the registration number according to international identifiers, information about the right holder, as well as the intended purpose - cultivation, use in food or feed products, etc.

Thus, Ukraine is introducing a centralized open platform for monitoring and supervising the use of GMOs for the first time. This step not only strengthens internal biosecurity, but also creates conditions for integration into the European market, which requires high standards of traceability and control in the field of genetic technologies.
