Ukraine has seen a decline in wholesale potato prices, which is affecting the agricultural market. Over the past two weeks, the price of potatoes has remained relatively stable, but this week many farmers were forced to adjust their prices, giving way in value.
According to analysts from the EastFruit project, today good-quality potatoes are sold at a price of 18 to 28 UAH/kg (from $0.43 to $0.67/kg), depending on the quality and volume of batches. This is 10% cheaper than a week ago.
Experts believe that one of the main reasons for the decline in prices is the decline in purchasing activity for potatoes. Market participants note that there is a decrease in demand, which has forced farmers to change their pricing policy, especially in conditions of significant supply volumes. In addition, some producers are facing problems associated with deterioration in product quality due to long-term storage. This has also become a factor that encourages farmers to reduce prices for faster sales of goods.
Despite the current decline in wholesale prices, it is important to note that potato prices in Ukraine remain higher compared to the beginning of February 2024. According to the latest data, potatoes are currently 21% more expensive, which is a positive factor for farmers compared to the same period last year.
Experts indicate that the decrease in prices is a normal process for the agricultural crop market, which often experiences seasonal fluctuations in demand and supply. However, these changes occurring in the potato market require attention from government authorities to maintain stability in the agricultural sector.
According to analysts' forecasts, if demand for potatoes does not recover in the near future, the price of products may continue to decline, which in turn will lead to a decrease in profitability for farmers. Therefore, farmers may be forced to adapt their potato growing and storage strategies to new market realities.
Thus, the decrease in wholesale potato prices in Ukraine is caused by a number of factors, but prices remain higher than last year, which indicates a certain stability in the market.
