In 2024, Ukraine achieved record volumes of grain exports by rail, exceeding the figures of both the war and pre-war periods. According to JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, 34.132 million tons of grain were exported by rail, which is 30% more than in 2023. This is the best result since 2020, as well as exceeding the pre-war level of 2021, when transportation amounted to 29.26 million tons.
This was reported by Valery Tkachev, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation Technology and Commercial Work of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukrinform reports.
The share of grain in total export traffic by rail has increased significantly - from 74% in 2023 to 86% in 2024. This is almost at the pre-war level (87%), but it has not yet been possible to exceed it. This trend indicates an increase in demand for rail transportation of agricultural products and stabilization of logistics routes.
The main direction of grain export traditionally remains the ports of the Odessa region, which in 2024 received 82% of the total grain cargo flow. Another 14% was sent through western border crossings, and 4% to the ports of the Danube. A special role in this growth was played by the stable operation of the Ukrainian Sea Corridor, which contributed to a 2.2-fold increase in transportation in the Black Sea direction.
In total, in 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 174.93 million tons of cargo, which is 17.9% more than in the previous year. This indicates not only the efficiency of railway logistics, but also the restoration of Ukraine's export potential, despite the challenges caused by the war.
