  • Construction of vegetable storage facilities: The key to Ukraine's food independence
    Опубликовано: 2024-01-09 12:09:40

In order to ensure stable food security and reduce dependence on imports, Dmytro Solomchuk, Ukrainian MP and member of the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy, has expressed the need to build about 150 vegetable storage facilities. This measure will open up new prospects for the country to achieve full self-sufficiency in agricultural production, especially in the spring.

The creation of modern vegetable storage facilities will not only ensure stable access to Ukrainian products on the domestic market, but will also eliminate the need for imports during periods when domestic stocks may lose quality due to unsuitable storage conditions.

Dmytro Solomchuk noted that many producers currently store their products in conditions that negatively affect the quality of the stored products. According to him, Ukrainian agriculture must bring its products to a new level of quality, and the construction of additional vegetable storage facilities is identified as one of the key ways to achieve this.

An important initiative is the distribution of 244 modular grain storage facilities supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to agricultural producers in Kherson region. This is noted as a complementary step in creating the necessary conditions for effective storage and management of the harvest.

The achievement of food independence is also associated with active demining of territories, educational programs and special equipment provided by international partners. The MP emphasized that this process is complex and requires attention and resources.

Over the past year, Ukraine has successfully attracted about €500 million for demining of land and de-occupied territories, receiving support from various countries such as Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Croatia, Austria, Spain and Slovenia. This demonstrates the importance of international cooperation and support in achieving strategic food security goals.
