  • Sharp decline in live pork prices: analysis and factors of influence
    Опубликовано: 2023-10-30 18:08:40

At the end of October, there was a sharp decline in prices for the purchase of pigs for slaughter, as analysts of the Ukrainian Pig Association found.

Last Friday, similar to the previous trading sessions, prices for slaughter pigs fell, and regional price differences remained. Despite isolated cases of higher prices, most consignments of pork in the East and Center were sold for UAH 66-68 per kilogram, and in the West for UAH 65-66 per kilogram. This week's weighted average was UAH 66.5 per kilogram, which is 7% lower than the previous level.

According to most market operators, seasonality is the main factor putting pressure on prices. This period traditionally sees a decrease in demand due to consumers' reorientation to other sources of protein and preparations for the heating season.

At the same time, the supply of pork is increasing, as animals gain weight again as temperatures drop.

Small fatteners are making a significant contribution to this situation, as they are becoming more active. While refraining from making public predictions about further price changes, meatpacking industry representatives note that pork trade has stabilized over the past few weeks. The decline in prices is helping the market to clear stocks and is pushing pork sales to revive.
