Potato prices in Ukraine have reached new records due to increased demand and limited supply of quality product. According to EastFruit analysts, prices for this vegetable in the production regions have started to grow and are already several times higher than in 2022.
At the beginning of last week, prices for potatoes ranged from 12 UAH/kg ($0.32/kg), but now almost no major producer is ready to sell them for less than 14-18 UAH/kg ($0.37-0.48/kg), which is on average 18% more expensive than a week earlier.
The increase in prices for quality potatoes is due to several factors, such as a decrease in the supply of substandard potatoes and an increase in demand for quality products. Some large farms are trying to limit sales, hoping for further price increases.
According to analysts, the price of potatoes in Ukraine is currently 3.6 times higher on average than at the end of December 2022. Market participants do not expect a decline in prices and plan to continue revising them upward.
On the eve of the New Year holidays, prices for other vegetables are also rising in Ukraine. Prices for Turkish tomatoes have reached new records, being imported at 80-90 UAH/kg, or 21% more expensive than in mid-December.
Onions have also risen in price due to a decrease in the supply of low-quality ones. Carrots are already going on sale at 11-15 UAH/kg ($0.29-0.40/kg), 10% more expensive than the average in December. Even with all the price increases, carrots remain 25% cheaper than in the same period last year.
