Since the beginning of November, the price of the main varieties of apples in Ukraine has fallen by 5-15%, according to analysts at Shuvar. The exception is premium apples, such as Golden and Gala, whose prices have risen by 2-3% since the beginning of the week.
For example, the average price for Black Prince apples dropped from 18 UAH/kg to 16.5 UAH/kg in early November, Aidared cost 19 UAH and is now sold for 14 UAH/kg, and Renet Simirenko lost in price, dropping from 16.5 UAH to 13.5 UAH/kg.
Tetyana Popovych, head of marketing at Shuvar, a wholesale agricultural market, explained that farmers comment on the price drop as a result of concerns about this year's harvest. They always reassure consumers that there will be no shortage of domestic apples.
The expert noted that the previous supplies of apples to the Russian market remain in Ukraine because of the significant volume of production that was previously exported. This restrains the growth of prices, but adds low-quality apples to the market.
Many farmers refuse to export due to high logistics costs and sell their products on the domestic market. According to the expert, saving on fertilizers has led to the cultivation of lower quality apples this year.
According to the expert, a prolonged rapid fall in apple prices is not expected, but the situation should be monitored in the context of the development of the agricultural market in Ukraine.
