The buckwheat market in Ukraine has seen a stabilization of supply and demand, which has led to a record drop in prices for this grain. According to the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, buckwheat prices decreased by 53% compared to last year, reaching the pre-war level of 44.4 UAH/kg.

Oleksandr Ovsyanyk, Director of Agroindustrial Department at AGROTRADE Group, confirms that this year buckwheat is not particularly attractive to investors from an economic point of view, as its prices have fallen.

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, in 2022, buckwheat plantings increased by more than 30% compared to the pre-war year of 2021. The total area under this crop this year amounted to 120.7 thou hectares, which is almost the same as the area planted with buckwheat last year - 121.0 thou hectares.

Along with the growth of buckwheat production, domestic demand for buckwheat has also increased. According to experts, the total amount of buckwheat consumed in the domestic market is 125-130 thousand tons per year.

Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, emphasized: "This season, taking into account the carry-over stocks, the available buckwheat resource will amount to 165 thousand tons. This is more than enough to meet domestic needs and create export potential, which may reach 20 thousand tons."

The record decline in buckwheat prices combined with increased production volumes create new conditions for domestic consumption and opportunities to expand its presence on international markets.
