  • Bulgaria considers transportation of Ukrainian grain by rail to Greek ports
    Опубликовано: 2023-07-27 11:08:23

Bulgaria is considering the possibility of transporting Ukrainian grain by rail to Greek ports to help Ukraine export agricultural products. This was announced by Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov after a meeting with his Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to the Mediapool media outlet, the proposal is for Bulgarian trains to transport wheat from the border of Ukraine and Romania through the territory of both countries to the Greek port of Alexandroupolis. However, there are some challenges related to the insufficient number of locomotives and freight cars in the Bulgarian State Railways.

It is also noted that private railway companies may face the same limitation with their rolling stock.

The press service of the Bulgarian government emphasized that the development of railway lines to the border stations of Kulata and Svilengrad is of great interest to Bulgaria. Improving the technical condition of these railroads will allow more cargo to be transported between the countries of the region and Greek ports.

Bulgaria's participation in the concession of the Greek ports of Kavala and Alexandroupolis is also an object of interest, even though the latter project is currently on hold.

For Ukraine, which is being affected by Russia's withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative and missile attacks on the port infrastructure of Odesa and Chornomorsk, expanding transportation routes and partnerships with other countries are becoming critical to ensure the safety of shipping and grain exports. Ukraine used to make extensive use of ports on the Danube for exports, but attacks on this infrastructure have also become a new challenge. President Zelenskyy has already convened a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff to discuss safe navigation and protecting the country's interests.
