Onions are getting more expensive: Ukraine records a rise in vegetable prices
One of the most popular vegetables, onions, continues to rise in price in Ukraine. In recent weeks, the average cost of this product on wholesale markets has increased significantly, which has caused concern among both consumers and traders.
According to agricultural market analysts, as of early May, onion prices reached 20–25 hryvnias per kilogram. Compared to the same period last year, this is almost twice as much. Experts call the main reasons for such a jump a decrease in domestic production volumes, unstable weather conditions and increased logistics costs.
Import restrictions from some countries that traditionally supplied onions to Ukraine also had a significant impact on the market. In particular, due to the geopolitical situation, supplies from Central Asian regions decreased, which further exacerbated the deficit on the domestic market.
Farmers note that this year's spring was unfavorable for early onions. Due to excessive rains and prolonged cold weather, part of the harvest was at risk. This led to a decrease in supply, which, in turn, stimulates price growth.
According to experts, onion prices will remain high at least until June, when the new crop begins to enter the market. However, the final situation will depend on weather conditions and import volumes, which currently remain limited.
Against the background of a general increase in vegetable prices, consumers are having to adapt to new realities. Some housewives have already begun to limit the use of onions in daily cooking, and restaurateurs are reviewing their menus to reduce costs.
