Sunflower prices in Ukraine continue to fall: analysts explain the reasons

In recent weeks, Ukraine has recorded a decrease in purchase prices for sunflower seeds. This phenomenon has become noticeable in different regions of the country and is caused by a complex of economic and market factors.

According to agricultural traders and market experts, the decrease in prices is primarily due to excess supply on the domestic market. After the active harvest in the fall, farmers massively sold seeds, which caused the supply to exceed demand from processing enterprises.

In addition, the situation is aggravated by the decrease in prices for vegetable oils on world markets. World sunflower oil quotes affect the domestic price of raw materials, since most of Ukrainian sunflower is exported in the form of oil. A decrease in external demand automatically puts pressure on prices within the country.

Another factor that influenced the decrease in the price of sunflower is limited logistics capacity. Due to difficulties with sea exports, a significant part of the products is delayed in warehouses. This creates additional pressure on the domestic market and forces farmers to reduce the price in order to sell the crop faster.

As of early May 2025, the purchase prices for sunflower seeds averaged 10,500–11,200 UAH/t, while in March they reached 12,000 UAH/t and more. Some processors have even temporarily suspended purchases due to high warehouse stocks.

Experts predict that the situation will persist at least until mid-summer, unless there are significant changes in the global market situation or the logistics situation improves. Farmers are advised to carefully plan sales and take into account possible price fluctuations when preparing for the next season.
