  • Ukraine is preparing to launch seven biomethane projects
    Опубликовано: 2024-09-03 13:09:55

In 2024, seven new biomethane projects are planned to be launched in Ukraine, which will cover several regions of the country. The new facilities will be located in Chernihiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Vinnytsia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, which makes them a significant step towards strengthening the country's energy independence. This information was made public by the head of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Heorhiy Heletukha, during the online event "Biogas and biomethane: New opportunities for Ukraine's energy independence", reports ExPro.

Among the planned projects, the largest in terms of volume include the construction of a biomethane plant of the Teofipol Energy Company in the Khmelnytskyi region, the capacity of which will reach 56 million cubic meters. m per year, with connection to the gas transportation system (GTS). Other projects, such as "Hals Agro" LLC in the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions, as well as the Vitargo group of companies in the Khmelnytsky region, plan to produce 3 million cubic meters each. m of biomethane per year with connection to gas distribution networks (GRM).

An important aspect of these projects is that several of them will be connected to Bio LNG, which will allow not only to produce, but also to export biomethane to European markets. In particular, the companies "YUM Liquid Gas" and MHP in the Vinnytsia region implement projects with a capacity of 11 and 24 million cubic meters. m per year, respectively, which will be a significant contribution to the development of bioenergy.

Against the background of aggression from Russia, which uses energy as a weapon, the issue of decentralization of Ukraine's energy system becomes extremely urgent. The coordinator of the G7+ group on providing assistance to the energy sector of Ukraine, Geoffrey Payette, emphasized the importance of building a new model of the energy system, which is based on ecologically clean generation, in particular biomethane. This, according to him, will ensure greater flexibility and reliability of energy supply.

Support from the European Union was also confirmed by Vice President of the European Commission Maros Šefčovych and European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson. They expressed interest in the development of cooperation with Ukraine in the field of biogas, emphasizing the strategic importance of this area for Ukraine's integration into the European energy market.

In turn, the Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Mykola Kolisnyk, said that for the successful implementation of biomethane projects, changes to the legislation were adopted, which allow the export of Ukrainian biomethane to the EU. In addition, the state is working on the adaptation of the gas distribution system for the transportation of biomethane, which will be an important step on the way to the energy independence of the country.
