Reducing soil acidity: advice from experienced summer residents
A successful harvest requires not only care and attention, but also the ability to correctly assess the level of soil acidity. Specialists recommend using proven methods to achieve a consistently high quality harvest.
In Ukraine, where agriculture plays a key role in the economy, an important problem arises - soil acidity. According to research, many lands have a high level of acidity, which can negatively affect productivity and the general condition of the soil.
Ash, which many consider a universal fertilizer, turns out to be an effective means of reducing soil acidity. To achieve the optimal effect, it is recommended to apply one kilogram of ash for every square meter. In cases of high acidity, this amount can be increased by 500 grams.
Another effective tool is chalk. It will cope well with reducing the acidity of the soil, adding the necessary elements to it. For highly acidified soil, it is recommended to apply 700 grams of chalk per square meter. In cases of moderate acidity, this amount can be reduced to 400 grams. For a weak degree of acidity, only a glass of chalk will be enough.
Dolomite flour is another effective alternative for reducing soil acidity. In addition, it has a positive effect on the soil structure. Depending on the level of acidity, the recommended amount of dolomite flour ranges from 300 to 500 grams per square meter.
Another important strategy is to use a crop that can positively affect soil acidity. Some plants, such as ammonia alfalfa or oxtail, have the ability to increase the pH level of the soil due to the characteristics of their root system. Growing such crops can serve as a natural method of combating acidity.
It is also important to consider the water balance of the soil. High humidity can lead to the excretion of acid ions, making the situation worse. Ensuring good drainage and rational use of water can help avoid acid build-up in the soil.
Farmers can also consider organic methods to combat acidity. The use of compost and natural fertilizers can help increase soil fertility and affect its pH level in a more favorable way.
It is important to note that the choice of method depends on the specific characteristics of the soil on the site and the level of its acidity. Remember that proper management of soil acidity is a step towards ensuring a healthy and productive summer harvest.
