Ukrainian aquaculture continued to demonstrate steady growth in 2024, showing a 22% increase in production. The total volume of aquaculture production amounted to 18,621 tons, which is a significant achievement for the industry. Fish production in Ukraine is supported by leading regions that occupy leading positions in the production of fish products.
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, five regions continue to lead in fish production: Cherkasy, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad and Sumy. The largest volumes of fish were produced in Cherkasy region — 4,400 tons. Lviv region produced 1,543 tons, Khmelnytskyi — 1,517 tons, Kirovohrad — 1,456 tons, and Sumy — 1,403 tons.
Given the diversity of fish species, carp is in the greatest demand, with production of 8,896 tons in 2024. Sturgeon accounts for a smaller volume - only 72 tons. Other popular fish species include silver carp (4,434 tons), grass carp (637 tons), pike perch (1,854 tons), salmon (396 tons), catfish (273 tons) and pike (211 tons). In addition, the production of edible caviar amounted to 4.3 tons.
The development of aquaculture is an important component of Ukraine's food security. Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Vitaliy Koval stressed the importance of supporting this industry, which allows ensuring a stable supply of high-quality fish products to the domestic market. He emphasized that the development of aquaculture is part of the import substitution policy, and the goal is to provide state institutions with domestically produced products.
Increasing fish production and supporting aquafarmers will help strengthen the domestic market and create new jobs. Ukraine has significant water resources and a favorable climate for the development of aquaculture, which allows the industry to grow and develop. In the future, this industry can become an important part of the country's agricultural sector, ensuring food security and regional development.
Thus, the dynamic development of Ukrainian aquaculture indicates the country's ability not only to increase the production of fish products, but also to improve their quality, which is especially important for meeting the needs of the domestic market.
