Peru has become the world leader in the export of table grapes, replacing Chile at the top of the ranking from the beginning of 2023. This is reported by TechHoriculture.

Peru gained an advantage with a longer growing season and cheaper labor. Peru's grape exports show annual growth of 14.3%, equivalent to 66,000 tonnes, while Chile's exports are down 6.6%, or 40,000 tonnes annually.

Experts from FAO FreshPlaza believe that the global table grape market is going through significant changes. Countries are actively replacing old varieties with new ones that meet modern consumer preferences and better resist pests, diseases and climatic stress. These changes are critical against a background of stagnation in the global fruit market and increased competition from new products such as blueberries. It is worth noting that Peru is also the world leader in blueberry exports.

In 2023, China rose significantly and now ranks third among exporters of fresh table grapes, displacing Italy and South Africa from third and fourth place respectively. China increases its exports by 7.4%, which corresponds to 28 thousand tons per year, while Italy's exports decrease by 10 thousand tons annually.

India also showed significant growth in grape exports, which grew by an impressive 10.2% year-on-year. This allowed India to rise to the eighth place in the world ranking of exporters, displacing the USA, whose exports are decreasing by 10% annually.

Turkey, which was in the top ten, significantly reduced its exports in 2023, falling below its usual ranking. At the same time, the export of grapes from Brazil is growing by 10.6% per year, and from Moldova - by 6%. Moldova rose to 18th place in the world ranking, while Uzbekistan, which was in the top 10 in 2022, fell to 20th place in 2023 due to the mass death of vineyards due to frost.

These changes in the table grape market demonstrate the evolution of the global agricultural sector and the adaptation of countries to new challenges and opportunities.
