Ukraine continues to increase its agricultural exports through the Black Sea, despite the risks and challenges associated with this activity. Ukraine's risky bet on maritime transportation of agricultural products has become an important symbol of the strategic importance of controlling trade through Black Sea ports. Although the number of ships serving this route is increasing, the risks remain significant, according to Ukragroconsult.
Experts point out that despite the new alternative corridor, which has greatly facilitated exports, it remains a risky operation. "This new alternative corridor will increase Ukraine's exports, but we'll see how important it will be," said Sergiy Feofilov, CEO of UkrAgroConsult.
Ships transporting grain are now taking a cautious approach and sailing closer to the coasts of NATO member states such as Bulgaria and Romania to reduce risks. Some ships using the new route are turning off their location signals as they approach Black Sea ports, according to ship tracking data.
At least 9 of the ships that have called at Ukraine's Black Sea ports are reportedly Panamax vessels, which are considered some of the largest grain ships in the world. This indicates that some ship owners are willing to take the risk of sending larger and more valuable vessels to Ukraine, despite the potential danger.
This initiative is of strategic importance for Ukraine, which is trying to expand its agricultural export capabilities and strengthen its status as a key player in the global agricultural market.
