Despite the difficulties of the occupation of the main vegetable growing areas and military operations, Ukrainian farmers proved to be on top of their game, preventing a "vegetable crisis" in Ukraine. They have expanded the area for growing vegetables, and this has made it possible to meet the needs of the domestic market, which has helped stabilize prices for consumers. This was reported by propozitsiya.com.
Yuriy Kormyshkin, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of JV PAEK LLC, emphasized that despite the circumstances, farmers managed to grow the necessary vegetables in the current period.
"We continue to harvest onions, there were many skeptics, but looking at my fellow farmers who are engaged in vegetables, I want to say that we were able to grow vegetables in this difficult time and there will be no vegetable crisis in our country!" said Kormyshkin.
It is important to note that the 2022 season was extremely difficult for farmers. The national market witnessed a rapid rise in prices for products such as onions and carrots. The cost of these vegetables reached UAH 70-95 per kilogram. This sharp rise in prices was the result of numerous factors, such as constant shelling, fertilizer shortages and high prices, rising fuel costs and shortages, as well as the destruction of agricultural machinery by shelling and the occupation of large areas that once supplied large quantities of staple vegetables to the domestic market.
In the 2023 season, despite possible losses in vegetable production and fertilizer risks, Ukrainian farmers made a significant contribution to stabilizing the domestic market by expanding the area under vegetable cultivation.
"For example, PAEK has allocated about 300 hectares of land under drip irrigation for growing vegetables. And, even if these vegetables were previously grown for the internal consumption of the company and its employees, in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, JV PAEK LLC will contribute to the stabilization of the domestic market by growing vegetables for sale," added Yuriy Kormyshkin.
