Milk production in Ukraine has been showing a downward trend in recent years, and 2025 was no exception. The private sector, which traditionally provided a significant part of the supply of raw materials to dairies, continues to reduce the number of cows and milk yields. However, some relief in the situation is provided by industrial farms, where, albeit slowly, an increase in milk production is observed.
According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, provided by the Association of Milk Producers, in February 2025 the volume of raw milk produced amounted to 439 thousand tons. This is 14 thousand tons or 3% less compared to January of the same year, and 24 thousand tons or 5% less compared to February 2024. Since the beginning of 2025, in two months, the total volume of milk production in Ukraine amounted to 891 thousand tons, which is 32 thousand tons or 4% less than in the same period of 2024.
Despite the overall decrease in milk production in the country, the share of industrial enterprises in February 2025 was 55%, while in households - 45%. Accordingly, enterprises produced 239 thousand tons of milk, which is 20 thousand tons or 8% less than in January 2025, but 4 thousand tons or 2% more than in February 2024. In general, in January-February 2025, dairy commodity farms (DCF) produced 499 thousand tons of milk, which is 21 thousand tons or 4% more than in the same period last year.
In contrast, the situation in household farms remains less positive. The volume of milk produced in February 2025 amounted to 200 thousand tons, which is 6 thousand tons or 3% more than in January of the same year. However, this figure is 28 thousand tons or 12% less than in February 2024. In two months of 2025, the household sector produced 393 thousand tons of milk, which is 53 thousand tons or 12% less than in the same period last year.
Analyst of the Milk Producers Association Georgy Kukhaleishvili notes that in 2025, dairy farms may refrain from further increasing production due to a decrease in demand for dairy products in the domestic market and a fall in purchase prices. Since dairy processing enterprises cannot purchase milk at market prices, a further increase in production may lead to an even greater fall in prices for dairy products.
Thus, despite some increase in milk production on industrial farms, the overall situation in the dairy industry remains difficult. Continuing work on restoring demand for dairy products and ensuring stability in the market are important tasks for stabilizing this important sector for the Ukrainian economy.
