The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has made an important step in the development of the agricultural sector by approving Resolution No. 917, which allows entrepreneurs to use small amounts of seeds and planting material of unregistered varieties for scientific or breeding research.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, the new resolution regulates the procedures for issuing or refusing, reissuing and canceling confirmations for the import of samples of seeds and planting material of plant varieties into Ukraine, as well as control over their use.

The Resolution also provides for the creation of an application form for obtaining confirmations and importing into Ukraine samples of seeds and planting material of plant varieties that have not been included in the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution, Breeding and Research.

An important aspect is the control over the use of seed and planting material samples exercised by the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

This step was introduced to promote the development of agricultural breeding and research, as well as to facilitate the use of new plant varieties, which can lead to improved yields and quality of agricultural products in Ukraine.

It is important to note that the previous regulatory act that regulated the import and export of seeds and planting material from Ukraine has been repealed.

In June 2023, the Government of Ukraine also simplified the seed certification procedure, which is another step in improving the country's agricultural sector.
