  • Romania continues to support grain transit through its territory from Ukraine
    Опубликовано: 2023-08-02 16:01:55

Romania continues to support the transit of grain through its territory from Ukraine, having recently increased its participation in this key trade route, which has become necessary due to the growing risks to the global food market due to Russia's attacks in the Black Sea. According to Bloomberg, Romania has already facilitated the transit of more than 20 million tons of grain from Ukraine, and now plans to open new checkpoints, hire additional staff and speed up the transit of ships through the Danube canals.

Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu said that Romania is in close contact with Ukraine to determine the best options for increasing and accelerating grain transit. She emphasized the importance of security and support for Ukraine in this difficult situation.

The breakdown of the Black Sea grain deal has threatened food security in Africa, where about half of the countries import more than a third of their wheat from Ukraine and Russia. This has increased pressure on existing routes of trade and cooperation between European Union countries. The port of Constanta in Romania, which is the largest port on the Black Sea in the region, has become an attractive option for Ukrainian companies due to its geographical location and low costs. However, this increased activity may lead to congestion of ports and transportation routes.

Romania is taking measures to increase the capacity of the port of Constanta, and has modernized and opened a railroad connection with Ukraine. The country is also working to attract the pilots needed to guide ships through the Sulina Canal to provide access to Ukrainian ports on the Danube. In May, the Sulyn Canal registered record traffic of more than 470 ships, indicating an increase in transit volumes.

Despite the challenges posed by rising tensions in the region, Romania continues to help Ukraine with grain transit, reflecting the close cooperation and support between the two countries in the face of geopolitical challenges.
