In 2024, Ukrainian seed producers demonstrated significant results, ensuring a total production volume of 500 thousand tons. This indicator covers both domestic and international producers operating in Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.

According to official data, 418 seed and planting material producers are registered in the country. The basis of the total production volume is made up of crops such as wheat (150.6 thousand tons), corn (153 thousand tons or 6.8 million sowing units), barley (41.8 thousand tons), sunflower (34.6 thousand tons or 9.6 million sowing units), soybeans (49 thousand tons) and rapeseed (981 tons, 245 thousand sowing units).

Foreign investments play an important role in the development of the seed sector. Seed factories established by leading international companies specializing in the processing of corn, sunflower and sugar beet seeds operate in Ukraine. These enterprises not only improve the quality of products, but also contribute to strengthening Ukraine's position in the world market.

Along with the growth of domestic production, there is a reduction in seed imports. In 2024, 42.3 thousand tons of agricultural crop seeds with a total value of $388 million were imported to Ukraine. This is $10 million less than in 2023, and the total weight of imports decreased by 7 thousand tons.

Sunflower remained the leader among imported crops, accounting for 45% of the total import structure. The total volume of imported sunflower seeds amounted to 16.4 thousand. tons (4.5 million sowing units) for the amount of $198.3 million. Corn took second place – 7.6 thousand tons (337 thousand sowing units) for $41.4 million. Rapeseed took 12% of imports, with an indicator of 4 thousand tons (1 million sowing units) for the amount of $45 million.

In general, the trend towards increasing domestic seed production in Ukraine indicates positive developments in agriculture and a decrease in dependence on imports. This not only strengthens the agricultural sector, but also opens up new opportunities for exporting quality products to the international market.
