A new increase in potato prices has been recorded in Ukraine. The cost of the popular vegetable rose by 16% compared to the same period last year. This happened after a short period of stability in the market.
The situation is reported by analysts of the EastFruit project, who note that the main factor in the price increase was the reduction in the supply of potatoes in local farms. Producers are increasingly facing challenges related to storage conditions and market conditions.
A significant part of farmers who do not have sufficient capacity for long-term storage of the crop completed the sale of potatoes in the first half of the season. This created a shortage of the product on the market, which, in turn, stimulated the price increase.
In addition to storage problems, other factors also affect the market. Experts note that due to adverse weather conditions last year, the potato harvest was smaller than expected. This increased pressure on producers and led to a reduction in supply.
According to analysts, the trend towards rising prices may persist, especially given the seasonal decrease in farm inventories. At the same time, price stabilization is possible closer to the beginning of the new harvest period, when fresh potatoes will begin to enter the market.
The rise in potato prices has already been felt not only by consumers, but also by representatives of the processing industry, who are forced to adapt to new conditions. The market situation demonstrates the importance of developing infrastructure for storing agricultural products and the need to introduce innovative approaches to farming.
