Ukraine is experiencing a decline in potato prices, which was made possible by increased imports of this product from Poland and Lithuania. Such countries offer potatoes at lower prices than domestic producers, which has affected the market situation.
This was reported by Tetyana Popovych, head of the marketing department of the Shuvar wholesale agricultural market in Lviv. According to her, in addition to imports, the decrease in potato prices was also influenced by a seasonal decrease in demand after the holiday periods.
Despite this, Ukrainian farmers continue to point to a low potato yield in 2024, which was the result of adverse weather conditions. Sudden frosts, drought, abnormal heat and lack of precipitation significantly complicated the growing process. In addition, part of the crop was kept in storage in anticipation of further price increases.
However, there is currently no shortage of potatoes on the Ukrainian market. On the contrary, sales volumes in 2024 exceeded the 2023 figures by 9%. However, it is predicted that in February-March, prices may increase due to reduced stocks in storage, reduced imports, and potential economic or logistical complications.
In December 2024, the average price of potatoes in Ukraine was 22.17 UAH/kg, which is 88% higher than in December 2023. The lowest prices in recent years were recorded in 2022, when the market had an excess supply due to a high harvest.
The main potato producers in Ukraine are Continental Farmers Group, the agricultural company "Adelaida" and "VPK-Agro". Continental Farmers Group grows potatoes on an area of about 2,000 hectares, "Adelaida" - on 500 hectares. The main growing regions remain Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Lviv and Kyiv regions. VPK-Agro is the market leader, specializing in the cultivation and storage of vegetables, including potatoes, carrots, beets and sweet corn.
The situation on the potato market is expected to remain dependent on weather conditions, imports and changes in domestic demand, which requires Ukrainian farmers to adapt to new challenges.
