This year, Ukraine has taken its first steps in exporting pears, sending 200 tons of this fruit abroad. Although the volume seems small, it still indicates the beginning of the development of pear exports from Ukraine. These data are given in the market review of the magazine "Gardening in Ukrainian".
As noted by Yevgeny Kuzin, an analyst of the fruit and vegetable market of the EastFruit project, pears have traditionally remained less popular compared to apples, but recent investments in pear cultivation are yielding results. Ukraine is not only reducing imports of this fruit, but is also actively increasing its own production, which has a positive impact on the market. One of the reasons for this is the decrease in the number of consumers of imported pears, which gives Ukrainian producers an advantage in the domestic market.
However, Ukrainian pears are still finding their place in foreign markets. This year, the first batches of this fruit were sent to countries such as Greece, Romania and Georgia. This indicates that Ukrainian pears can become competitive in European markets, where demand for high-quality and fresh fruit is growing.
Despite the start of exports, Ukrainian pears are also finding a place in the domestic market. As a result, pear imports did not increase in the spring period, as was observed earlier. This is a positive signal for local producers, since reducing dependence on imports allows us to maintain domestic production and meet consumer needs.
However, it should be noted that Ukraine has certain difficulties with the export of other fruits. In particular, apple exports this season have decreased due to a lack of quality products, which has affected the prospects for the 2024/2025 export season. At the same time, apple concentrate exports continue to be the leader among Ukrainian horticultural products in foreign markets.
Thus, the start of pear exports is an important step for the development of Ukrainian horticulture in international markets. However, for sustainable growth, it is necessary to increase production volumes and improve product quality to ensure competitiveness in the global market.
