This week, the vegetable market in Ukraine faced a sharp drop in prices for white cabbage. Such a situation, which is not in favor of producers, is caused by a significant surplus of products, in particular mid-late varieties suitable for long-term storage. This has caused considerable concern among farmers who are facing limited demand.
According to data from ProAgro Group, referring to EastFruit, prices for white cabbage currently range from UAH 15 to UAH 23/kg, which is 16% lower on average than last week. This wide range of prices is explained by the different quality of vegetables offered for sale.
Analysts note that active harvesting is still ongoing in many farms, which increases the load on the market. At the same time, the demand for cabbage remains at a very low level. Wholesalers and supermarket chains limit purchases and make them exclusively small wholesale due to the short sales period of cabbage, because most of the products have low quality characteristics.
Despite the negative dynamics of prices, the current value of white cabbage is still 2.9 times higher than the level of the same period last year. However, experts do not rule out a further drop in prices, as farmers continue to actively harvest, increasing its volume on the market, amid improving weather conditions.
The availability of large quantities of produce puts pressure on farmers, who are forced to lower prices to sell their crops. Many farms may face financial difficulties if demand for cabbage does not increase and sales do not improve. This could lead to even greater price concessions in the near future.
Thus, the situation on the cabbage market remains unstable, and further developments will depend on changes in consumer demand and the ability to store crops in farms with limited resources.
