Decrease in pork exports from Ukraine: new trends in the market
In 2023, Ukraine recorded a significant reduction in the export of chilled and frozen pork. According to the State Customs Service, export volumes decreased by 27% compared to the previous year, reaching only 12.5 thousand tons. This is the lowest figure in the last few years, which is caused by a number of factors that affect the pork market in Ukraine.
The main reasons for the decrease in exports are internal economic problems, in particular the ongoing war in Ukraine. The conflict has significantly affected the agricultural sector, complicating production and logistics. Many farmers face difficulties in providing fodder, as well as security issues that prevent them from doing business at the usual volumes.
In addition, changes in the international market also affected Ukrainian exports. The increase in prices for pigs in Europe prompted some countries to reduce purchases of Ukrainian products. European importers prefer products from other countries, which affects Ukrainian suppliers. Thus, competition on foreign markets is becoming more and more fierce.
It should be noted that despite the decrease in exports, the domestic consumption of pork in Ukraine remains stable. According to forecasts, pork consumption per capita in 2023 will be about 22 kg, which indicates a relatively high level of demand for this type of meat. However, reduced exports may lead to oversaturation of the domestic market, which in turn may lower pork prices.
Farmers and experts believe that a number of measures must be taken to restore export volumes. Among them are the improvement of infrastructure, state support for manufacturers, as well as the expansion of sales markets. The restoration of international relations and the establishment of new supply channels can become key factors for the recovery of pork exports from Ukraine.
Therefore, the reduction in the export of chilled and frozen pork indicates the challenges faced by the Ukrainian agricultural sector. To overcome these difficulties, it is necessary to combine the efforts of the state and business to ensure stable development of the industry and restore the country's export position.
