In Cherkasy region, the situation with insufficient soil moisture is not critical, but the precipitation deficit has been going on since the beginning of May, said Vitaliy Postrygan, head of the regional hydrometeorological center. This was reported by propozitsiya.com based on agronews.ua.
According to Vitaliy Postrygan, a significant precipitation deficit that has been going on in Cherkasy region since early May has led to dry spells under early grain crops:
"Soil moisture losses are increasing, which also applies to later and industrial crops. In some areas of the southern part of Cherkasy region, the soil becomes dry to a depth of 70-80 centimeters. Moisture remains only at a deeper level. However, the situation is not critical."
"Winter crops are still filling grain, so the plants' moisture requirements are low, and the developed root system during this period allows them to withstand the dry period. Due to periodic cold snaps, uneven and low precipitation, as well as dew, the effects of drought are not irreversible for early crops, later crops and industrial crops," explained Vitaliy Postrygan.
The most negative conditions are created for potatoes, the forecaster noted:
"The soil temperature at a depth of 10 centimeters reaches 24-25º, which is very high and leads to a slowdown and stunting of potato growth."
Agricultural experts and farmers fear that this situation could lead to a shortage of potatoes on the regional market. Potatoes are a staple food in Ukraine, and insufficient yields could lead to higher prices for this product.
To reduce the risk of a potato shortage, farmers can take measures to water and use artificial irrigation. It is also important to continuously monitor the condition of crops and ensure their proper care.
Observing and forecasting weather conditions is extremely important for the agricultural sector. Developing effective climate change risk management strategies can help farmers ensure a stable production process and avoid negative consequences for agricultural production.
In case of a shortage of potatoes on the regional market, the authorities and agricultural organizations should take the necessary measures to provide the population with affordable food and reduce the negative impact on society.
