Effective post-emergence protection of dicotyledonous crops: modern approaches in herbicide treatment

In modern crop production, crop protection from weeds plays an important role, especially in the post-emergence period. For dicotyledonous crops, this issue is especially relevant, because weeds significantly reduce yield, competing for moisture, light and nutrients. Therefore, post-emergence herbicide protection is becoming one of the key elements of agricultural technology.

Post-emergence herbicides are used when the crop has already emerged and begun to develop. This allows for more precise control of weed development and reduces the risk of phytotoxicity for the main crop. In the case of dicotyledonous crops, such as soybeans, rapeseed, beets, peas and others, the correct choice of the drug and the timing of its application are crucial.

Modern herbicides used after emergence have a wide spectrum of action and allow for the effective destruction of both annual and some perennial weeds. For example, preparations based on bentazone, florasulam, or dicamba demonstrate high efficiency against quinoa, schirytsia, bittercress and other common types of weeds. Such active ingredients penetrate through the leaf surface and provide systemic action.

It is also important to take into account the phase of development of the cultivated plant. Too early application can cause damage to young shoots, while late application reduces the effectiveness of the drug. The optimal period for treatment is the stage of 2–4 true leaves, when weeds are still young and more sensitive to herbicides.

Another key factor in successful herbicide treatment is weather conditions. High temperature and humidity can enhance the effect of the drug, while stressful conditions (drought, cold) reduce its effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to monitor the agrometeorological situation and apply the drugs in optimal conditions.

Post-emergence protection is not only about weed control, but also about a long-term crop management strategy. The integrated use of herbicides in combination with agrotechnical measures allows you to preserve the potential of the crop, improve its quality and ensure the economic efficiency of the farm. Success in this direction depends on the competent selection of drugs, precise adherence to technology and taking into account the characteristics of each crop.
