Projected increase in egg prices in Ukraine: causes and consequences for consumers
A trend towards a significant increase in egg prices is observed in Ukraine. Analysts point to a number of factors influencing these changes, including an increase in production costs and a decrease in the number of poultry. These factors promise to seriously affect the market and consumer wallets in the near future.
Currently, eggs are one of the main food products for many Ukrainians. However, due to a sharp increase in the cost of feed, energy and other components of the production process, their prices have begun to grow steadily. According to market data, the cost of a dozen eggs has already increased by 30-40% compared to the beginning of the year. Some forecasts indicate that by the end of 2024 prices may increase even more, which will be a serious blow to the family budget, especially given the general inflation and the decline in real incomes of the population.
One of the reasons for this increase is the high prices of poultry feed. The cost of the main components of feed, in particular cereals, has increased due to global climate change, which affects yields in many countries. In addition, a significant increase in energy prices has also affected the cost of egg production. All this has led to an increase in the cost of keeping poultry, which, in turn, inevitably affects the final price for the consumer.
Another important factor is the decline in the poultry population in Ukraine. Due to economic instability and difficult market conditions, some farmers have been forced to reduce production volumes or even close their farms. Over the past year, the number of laying hens in the country has decreased by 10-15%, which has caused a shortage in the egg market and an increase in their cost.
Analysts also note that the situation on the foreign market may affect the cost of eggs in Ukraine. As a result of a number of international economic and political factors, Ukraine has become less competitive in international markets. This has led to a decrease in export volumes and a reduction in foreign exchange earnings from the sale of eggs abroad. As a result, producers are directing most of their production to the domestic market, which also exacerbates the shortage and increases prices.
Regarding future forecasts, experts believe that in the near future egg prices in Ukraine will continue to grow. Rising production costs, reduced production volumes and other factors usually lead to an increase in the cost of products. It is predicted that by the end of 2024 the price of a dozen eggs may increase by 50-60% compared to the current level.
Therefore, Ukrainians should be prepared for new economic realities, when even such basic products as eggs will become significantly more expensive. This is likely to have not only economic but also social consequences, since a large part of the population may face difficulties in securing their food.
