  • The European Commission may soon introduce import duties on Ukrainian eggs
    Опубликовано: 2024-06-21 13:07:50

In the near future, the European Commission may impose import duties on Ukrainian eggs due to exceeding the established quotas for their supply to the EU. This is reported by Euronews.

According to information, Ukraine has reached the limit for egg exports to the European Union, so the European Commission plans to restore import duties on these products within the next two weeks. This decision aims to protect the European market from excessive imports.

Trade experts note that, in addition to eggs, the EU executive is also focused on the import of Ukrainian sugar. This indicates concern about a possible excessive increase in the supply of this product from Ukraine.

The new free trade scheme, which came into effect on June 6, includes an automatic safeguard mechanism. This mechanism was created to protect certain "sensitive" sectors of the European economy, such as eggs, poultry, sugar, corn, shelled grains, oats and honey, from a sudden increase in imports after the abolition of quotas and customs duties.

In practice, this means that the European Commission has the right to use the so-called "emergency braking" and re-introduce tariff quotas for the import of these goods from Ukraine. This will happen if import volumes exceed the arithmetic average for the period from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2023.

The safeguard mechanism allows the EU to temporarily restore trade restrictions to prevent excessive import growth in certain "sensitive" market segments. At the same time, this mechanism does not completely block the operation of the free trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

It is worth noting that since June 19, the EU has already imposed tariffs on Ukrainian oats due to exceeding the established quotas. This is another example of how the new free trade scheme works in practice to protect European producers.
