  • Poland sharply increases fertilizer supplies to Ukraine: the market reacts to the shortage and destruction of production
    Опубликовано: 2026-04-14 18:06:20

Against the backdrop of the loss of some industrial capacity, Ukraine is significantly increasing the import of mineral fertilizers. In this supply structure, Poland quickly established itself as one of the key partners, providing about 25% of Ukrainian imports and ahead of such suppliers as Bulgaria, Morocco and China. This is reported by the Polish publication WNP.

Ukraine's agricultural sector remains one of the largest in Europe, as the country possesses significant natural resources. According to various estimates, from 25% to 40% of the world's reserves of black soil - soils considered to be among the most fertile in the world - are concentrated on its territory. The main areas of arable land are used for key crops: wheat (25%), corn (20%), barley (9%) and oilseeds, which require intensive fertilization to maintain yields.

In 2024, the volume of imports of mineral fertilizers into Ukraine reached $1.27 billion. Over the previous year, the country imported 3.285 million tons of fertilizers, which is 13% more than in the previous period. At the same time, ProAgro Group analysts note that Ukraine entered 2026 with a significant deficit, as the total demand for fertilizers exceeds 5 million tons.

Against this background, the positions of Polish manufacturers have especially strengthened. Grupa Azoty and Anwil are actively increasing exports to Ukraine, filling the niche that formed after Russian suppliers lost access to the Ukrainian market. Sales dynamics demonstrate stable growth: $251 million in 2022, $319 million in 2024 and over $350 million according to preliminary data last year.

Experts explain this growth by several key factors. Firstly, Poland’s geographical proximity provides fast and relatively cheap logistics. Secondly, Polish products are free from sanctions risks and have a clearly confirmed origin. Thirdly, market conditions make them competitive against the backdrop of limited exports from China and the unstable situation in the Gulf countries.

President of Grupa Azoty Marcin Celejewski confirms the growth of demand for Polish fertilizers in Ukraine and notes the presence of a queue of buyers. According to him, exports continue to expand against the backdrop of high demand from the Ukrainian side.

The article emphasizes that the return of Russian producers to the Ukrainian market is politically impossible, and domestic production in Ukraine remains limited. This creates a long-term “window of opportunity” for the Polish chemical sector, which can maintain a strong position in the Ukrainian market in the coming years.
