  • Ukrainian vegetable market: excess stocks are collapsing prices for open-field produce
    Опубликовано: 2026-04-13 18:06:36

The Ukrainian vegetable market currently demonstrates a clear gap in price dynamics between open-field produce and greenhouse vegetables. Such asymmetry creates a heterogeneous situation, when some segments are sharply cheaper, while others, on the contrary, maintain high price levels.

This is evidenced by the results of monitoring by the Ukrainian Agrarian Business Club. Analysts note that in general the market remains relatively stable, but the internal price structure is changing under the influence of opposing factors in different segments.

The most noticeable drop in prices was recorded in the category of open-field vegetables. Due to favorable weather conditions in the previous season, significant stocks of quality products accumulated on the market, which significantly increased supply.

This surplus led to a sharp decrease in the price of key items of the so-called “borscht set” - cabbage, beets, carrots, onions and potatoes. These vegetables are currently playing the role of the main stabilizer of the food basket of Ukrainian consumers, restraining the overall growth of food costs.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Agrarian Business Club emphasizes that the current price decline is temporary. Retail trade is gradually selling off warehouse stocks, while storage costs — in particular, electricity and logistics — are growing. This may become the basis for a seasonal adjustment of prices upwards in the coming months.

In contrast, the segment of greenhouse and imported vegetables is maintained at a significantly higher price level. Cucumbers and tomatoes are becoming more expensive due to high costs of energy supply for greenhouse production in the winter. Additional factors are dependence on the exchange rate and logistical costs for importing products.

Analysts of the Ukrainian Agrarian Business Club assess the current situation as a structural imbalance in the market. Cheap stocks of open-field vegetables temporarily restrain the overall price level, while greenhouse production creates the opposite inflationary pressure.

    As of April, average wholesale prices for basic vegetables look like this: onions — 8 UAH/kg (-61% per year), potatoes — 10 UAH/kg (-52%), carrots — 8 UAH/kg (-75%), cucumbers — 47.5 UAH/kg (-55%), tomatoes — 79.5 UAH/kg (-5%), beets — 7.5 UAH/kg (-31%), cabbage — 8 UAH/kg (-67%).

As a result, the vegetable market in Ukraine is in a phase of complex seasonal restructuring, where excess stocks and rising costs simultaneously form multidirectional price dynamics, affecting both producers and end consumers.
