  • Iran Reorients Grain Imports: Chabahar Becomes New Logistics Hub
    Опубликовано: 2026-04-02 13:05:43

Iran is changing traditional food supply routes, trying to ensure stable imports of key products against the backdrop of the virtual closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The focus is on grains, which are critical to the country’s food security.

Bloomberg reports on such changes, citing data from shipping analysts. According to estimates, Iran is actively redirecting cargo flows to alternative ports to bypass restrictions in the strategically important region.

In particular, a significant increase in the transshipment of agricultural products was recorded at the Shahid Beheshti port, which is located on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. According to the Kpler vessel tracking system, the volume of agricultural cargo handled here exceeded 120 thousand tons in just one week.

This is approximately 12% more compared to deliveries to the country’s main grain hub, the port of Bandar Imam Khomeini. Previously, much smaller volumes of grain passed through Chabahar, while the main flow traditionally went to this key terminal.

At the same time, analytical data indicate a decrease in shipping activity near the main port, which usually receives cargo through the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, at least 14 vessels, including both grain carriers and coal ships, are already heading to Chabahar.

Experts note that the port of Chabahar is gradually gaining the status of an alternative logistics center. Recently, cargo storage capacities have been expanded here, which increases its attractiveness for international traders.

Madeleine Overgore, senior market data manager at Kpler, noted that such changes may indicate the initial phase of transferring part of the grain flows to Chabahar. According to her, Iran has the potential to significantly increase imports through this port in the near future.
