FAO has completed one of the main initiatives of 2025 in Ukraine – the distribution of 615 modular granaries to farmers in frontline regions. This assistance has become especially relevant at a time when a significant part of the elevator capacities has been destroyed by the war.
Modular granaries allow farmers to safely store their harvest and plan for the new season without the risk of significant losses. Each storage has a capacity of 1,000 tons, is easy to assemble and does not require sophisticated equipment, making it accessible even to small farms in frontline regions.
The initiative was made possible thanks to the support of the governments of Canada and Japan. In total, the assistance reached farmers in seven regions of Ukraine, where grain storage is critically important due to the risks of damage or loss of products during transportation.
“These storage facilities give Ukrainian farmers what they need most in times of war – stability and the ability to look to the future with hope. We will continue to support them on this path,” said Shakhnoza Muminova, Head of the FAO Office in Ukraine.
Since 2022, FAO, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, has transferred more than 37,000 grain sleeves, 105 sets of equipment and 859 modular storage facilities to Ukrainian agricultural producers. This has saved more than 8 million tons of grain, which has become critically important for the country’s food security.
FAO emphasizes that providing modern storage facilities helps Ukrainian farmers minimize post-harvest losses and sustainably develop the agro-industrial sector even in difficult war conditions. This allows the country to maintain food stability and plan future harvests with greater confidence.
