  • 2025 was a turning point for the agricultural sector of the European Union

2025 was a turning point for the agricultural sector of the European Union. According to Eurostat, the agricultural labor productivity index increased by 9.2% compared to the previous year. This means that farms began to generate significantly more income (+8.1%) with less human resources (-1.0%). Such an increase demonstrates the effectiveness of modern technologies and automation in replacing routine labor.

Productivity growth was recorded in 19 EU countries. The greatest successes were achieved by states that are actively implementing the modernization of the agricultural sector. Luxembourg topped the rating with a record productivity growth of +40.1%, Poland was in second place with an indicator of +33.4%, and Estonia closed the top three (+30.9%). This indicates the effective implementation of innovations and modern technologies in farms of these countries.

At the same time, labor productivity has decreased in eight EU countries. The largest declines were recorded in Croatia (-14.9%), Portugal (-10.7%) and Greece (-8.8%). Such negative indicators are associated with economic problems, low levels of automation and local market characteristics that limit efficiency gains.

Over the past decade, agricultural labor productivity in the EU has increased by almost 50%. Real income in the agricultural sector has increased by 20%, while labor costs have decreased by almost 20%. This indicates the transformation of agriculture from a traditionally labor-intensive process to a high-tech and productive industry.

It is important to note that labor productivity is measured as real income per worker under full employment conditions. This should not be confused with total farm income or individual wages. The index shows how effectively agricultural enterprises use land, capital and human resources to create economic value, adjusted for inflation.

Analysts note that the key drivers of productivity growth have been automation of processes, the introduction of modern technology, innovative management systems and optimization of resource use. The EU demonstrates that technological modernization of the agricultural sector can ensure stable income growth and the competitiveness of farms in the global market.
