  • Ukraine is among the top ten world leaders in wheat production and the top three exporters in 2024
    Опубликовано: 2025-10-17 18:04:39

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in 2024 Ukraine ranked 9th in the world in terms of wheat production, producing about 23.4 million tons of grain. This was reported by ProAgro Group.

Experts Club analysts, based on FAOSTAT statistics, note that the top three world wheat producers remained unchanged: China – 136 million tons, India – 113.9 million tons and Russia – 81.6 million tons. These three countries provide almost 50% of world grain production.

Next in the ranking are: the USA – 53.6 million tons, France and Canada – 35.9 million tons each, Australia – 34.1 million tons, Pakistan – 31.4 million tons, Ukraine – 23.4 million tons and Germany – 21.5 million tons. The second ten are opened by Turkey (19 million tons) and Kazakhstan (18.6 million tons), and the ranking is completed by Italy (6.9 million tons).

Ukraine demonstrates significant progress compared to the beginning of the 1990s, when wheat production was about 15 million tons. Despite military risks and export restrictions, the volume of grain increased to 23–24 million tons in 2024, which became an important indicator of the sustainability of the agricultural sector.

In addition to production volumes, Ukraine retains the status of one of the largest wheat exporters in the world. The main factors are high yields in the southern and central regions, as well as improved logistics through Danube ports and export routes through Romania and Bulgaria. According to FAO, Ukrainian wheat exports in 2024 amounted to about 17 million tons, which allowed the country to remain in the top three global suppliers along with Russia and the United States.

According to Maksym Urakin, co-founder of Experts Club, Ukraine’s position in the TOP-10 global wheat producers demonstrates the resilience of the agricultural sector even during the war. He noted that with the development of domestic processing, Ukraine can increase production to 25–27 million tons in the coming years and strengthen its position among the world’s top five exporters. According to the analyst, the digitalization of agribusiness, precision agriculture and climate-resistant wheat varieties will determine leadership in the grain market in the next decade.
