Ukrainian soils have the highest potential for growing potatoes in Europe. This was stated by Polish agrarian Piotr Kuszel, noting that some Ukrainian potato varieties yield up to 100 t/ha, which is an unattainable indicator for Poland and Germany. This is reported by “Suspilne Lutsk”.
The farmer’s words were spoken during the “Field Day” in the village of Kozyn, Lutsk district, where Ukrainian and Polish agrarians had the opportunity to get acquainted with 79 varieties of seed potatoes of Ukrainian and European selection. The event was organized by Volyn farmer Anatoliy Arshulik, who has been demonstrating the results of his work to colleagues in the agricultural sector for ten years.
“We choose those varieties that are well adapted to the agroclimatic conditions of Volyn. If we see that the variety is resistant to diseases and gives a high yield, we propagate it as seed material,” Arshulik said. This year, the highest yield was demonstrated by the Larissa variety, which is grown on an area of 30 hectares.
Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Oleksandr Stupenko advised adding boron to the soil before planting, and fertilizing with phosphorus and nitrogen after planting. “The varieties are selected well, the yield is high: from three to four bushes we get more than a bucket of potatoes,” the scientist noted.
According to the Volyn Department of Agroindustrial Development, this year 80 thousand hectares have been planted with potatoes in the region, from which a harvest of about 1 million tons is expected. At the same time, 99% of the areas are cultivated by peasants, the rest belongs to farms.
Experts note that the fertility of Ukrainian soils, appropriate selection of varieties, and the use of modern agricultural technologies allow Ukraine to compete with leading European potato producers and demonstrate record yields.
