In Ukraine, more and more farmers are growing grapes in greenhouses, which ensures a stable harvest and the opportunity to extend the harvest season of table varieties. Professional greenhouse farms are most common in the Odessa region, but in recent years the popularity of closed ground has been growing throughout the country, including among amateur gardeners.
“This can already be called a social phenomenon,” says Olga Yulina, co-founder of the Yulinykh Vineyard company. “I was surprised that orders for planting material came even from Lviv. Grapes in greenhouses successfully ripen in any region, because the climate in Ukraine is changing, the number of warm days is increasing.”
Experts emphasize that for the successful cultivation of grapes in closed ground, proper ventilation of the greenhouse is important. “Grapes are self-pollinating, so to improve pollination, I made additional holes in the ceiling every 15–20 meters,” explains Yulina.
Another difference in greenhouse cultivation is the denser planting of bushes. In closed ground, plants grow upwards, not in width, so bushes reach 2.8–3 meters, while in open ground the average height is about 2.6 m. The standard height of a greenhouse is sufficient for this, farmers assure.
Greenhouse viticulture allows you to control the microclimate, fertilization and hydration, which is especially important in dry years. It also makes it possible to harvest earlier and continue selling products until late autumn, which increases the profitability of farms.
Experts believe that given climate change and the growing demand for high-quality table grapes, greenhouse cultivation will become one of the key areas of horticulture development in Ukraine. Such technologies allow not only to increase production volume, but also to improve the quality of berries for the domestic market and export.
