Updated rules for transporting pets on trains, introduced by Ukrzaliznytsia, have come into force in Ukraine. The changes should make rail travel more comfortable for both pet owners and other passengers. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, emphasizing that the new rules were developed in cooperation with animal rights activists.
One of the main innovations is the permission to transport large dogs (over 45 cm at the withers) in all categories of carriages, including compartment (SV), international (RIC) and high-speed Intercity+. The only condition is that the passenger must buy all the seats in the compartment or a block of seats in the same row for himself and the dog.
Benefits have also been defined for service dogs accompanying military personnel. Such animals can travel free of charge in any carriage, but must be on a leash and muzzled.
Significant changes also apply to the requirements for carriers. Now, not only hard boxes can be used to transport animals, but also bags, backpacks or other soft means with a waterproof absorbent bottom. This greatly simplifies transportation, especially for owners of cats and small dogs.
Passengers with small pets are allowed to stay in the compartment without a carrier, but only if all seats are purchased. All animals must be registered during the journey by purchasing a separate ticket, and owners must have veterinary documents on hand. Large dogs, as before, must be on a leash and muzzled.
In the event of discomfort or an allergic reaction in other passengers, the train crew is obliged to help organize a transfer within the train. The new rules were agreed with UAnimals and have already come into force, reflecting the desire to make rail travel more pet-friendly.
