A noticeable decline in wholesale prices for greenhouse tomatoes continues in Ukraine. Despite stable consumer demand, a surplus of products has formed on the market, which has led to a further drop in prices. The main reason is the rapid increase in the volume of harvesting in film greenhouses in the southern regions of the country.
EastFruit analysts report that the market is currently facing the so-called "price pressure from supply": products from the south arrive in large volumes, and this exceeds the market's ability to quickly absorb it. At the same time, demand for vegetables remains stable, without significant growth, which only exacerbates the imbalance between supply and consumer needs.
Weather conditions in recent weeks - warm and sunny weather - contributed to the accelerated ripening of tomatoes in greenhouses. This significantly shortened the period between technical maturity and the harvest period, which, in turn, provoked the arrival of large batches of vegetables on the market at the same time. As a result, the average market price decreased by 14% in the last week alone.
As of now, producers are selling tomatoes for 40–55 hryvnias per kilogram. The final price depends on the quality of the product and the volume of the batch. Despite the decrease, prices for greenhouse tomatoes remain higher than last year: on average 17% more than in mid-July 2024. This indicates an increase in production costs, which also affect the formation of prices.
According to market representatives, the trend towards cheaper prices may continue in the coming weeks. The reason is that many farms have only just begun active harvesting, so the supply volume will most likely increase further. In such a situation, the pressure on prices may increase, especially if the weather remains favorable for harvesting.
The price reduction is expected to boost demand among wholesale buyers and end consumers. At the same time, for farmers, such dynamics mean the need for careful logistics and marketing planning to avoid overproduction and reduce financial losses.
