  • Cattle population in Ukraine is decreasing: who is leading in terms of the number of animals
    Опубликовано: 2025-06-26 13:00:42

As of June 1, 2025, Ukraine is experiencing a further decrease in the number of cattle (cattle). According to the Association of Milk Producers, the total decrease is 8% compared to the same date last year. The main reason is the decrease in the number of livestock in personal farms, while the industrial sector has even recorded a slight increase in the number of cows.

The total number of cattle in Ukraine is currently 2.17 million heads, of which 1.15 million are cows. Compared to the previous month, the number of cattle decreased by 10 thousand heads, which is 0.5%. The number of cows over the same period decreased by 3.9 thousand (-0.3%). Of the total livestock, about 42% is kept in industrial farms, while 58% is held by the population.

In the industrial sector, there are 918.6 thousand cattle — 3 thousand less than a month earlier. However, over the year, the number of animals at enterprises decreased slightly — by 1 thousand heads (-0.1%). At the same time, positive dynamics are observed in the number of cows: there were 3.7 thousand more (+1%), which indicates that the business remains focused on dairy production.

In contrast, the situation in the household sector remains alarming. As of the beginning of June, 1.25 million cattle are kept in private farms, which is 7 thousand less (-1%) compared to May. Over the year, the decline in this segment is 188 thousand heads (-13%), and the number of cows decreased by 107 thousand (-12%). This indicates a serious degradation of livestock farming in the private sector, which has potentially negative consequences for domestic milk production.

Regional analysis shows that the majority of cattle in Ukraine is concentrated in several central and western regions. The leader is Khmelnytskyi region, where 196.6 thousand heads are kept. This is followed by Poltava (177.4 thousand), Vinnytsia (174.7 thousand), Odesa (137.7 thousand), Ternopil (134.5 thousand), Cherkasy (125.4 thousand), Chernihiv (124.2 thousand) and Zhytomyr (114.6 thousand) regions. It is in these regions that almost 55% of the total cattle population in the country is concentrated.

Thus, although large agricultural enterprises demonstrate stability or even growth in certain segments, the general trend towards a reduction in the number of cattle in Ukraine continues. The decline in livestock numbers on farms poses a serious challenge to food security and the development of the dairy industry in the face of military and economic pressure.
