Sudden invasion: warm spring contributed to the mass spread of cabbage aphids on winter rape

This year's spring turned out to be favorable for the development of pests, in particular cabbage aphids, which actively settled winter rape crops in many regions of Ukraine. Unusually warm weather with little precipitation created ideal conditions for the mass reproduction of these insects.

Agricultural sector specialists have already recorded numerous cases of crop damage, especially in the central and southern regions. Aphids multiply rapidly and can cause significant economic losses, weakening plants, impairing their development and reducing yields.

Cabbage aphids suck juices from the leaves and young shoots of rape, as a result of which the plants lose turgor, turn yellow and lag behind in growth. Mass infection during the budding and flowering phase of the crop, when the main elements of the crop are formed, is of particular danger.

According to agronomists, favorable weather conditions — daytime temperatures above +15°C and the absence of heavy rains — allowed aphids to actively develop without natural restrictions, such as diseases or natural enemies. Some farms have already taken chemical protection measures, but the need for systematic monitoring of the situation is emphasized.

Experts advise agricultural producers to regularly inspect fields, paying attention to the underside of leaves, where aphids most often accumulate. In case of detection of a high density of the pest (more than 10 individuals per plant), it is recommended to use insecticides approved for use on rapeseed. The choice of the drug should take into account the phase of crop development and environmental safety.

Thus, the current situation requires vigilance on the part of farmers and a quick response to threats. If the development of cabbage aphids is not controlled, this may negatively affect not only this year's harvest, but also the general condition of the fields in the future.
