  • Denmark implements historic changes: Europe's first tax on emissions from the agricultural sector
    Опубликовано: 2024-06-28 18:05:48

The Danish government has decided to introduce Europe's first tax on carbon dioxide emissions from agriculture. This became possible after five months of negotiations with farming and environmental organizations. According to the agreed agreement, from 2030 farmers will have to pay 120 Danish kroner for every metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, and from 2035 this rate will rise to 300 kroner.

In addition to the tax, the state will allocate 5.3 billion euros for the afforestation of 250,000 hectares of agricultural land by 2045, as well as set aside 140,000 hectares of lowland land by 2030 to reduce nitrogen emissions. In addition, it is planned to buy out farms in order to reduce the impact on the environment.

The Minister of Economy of Denmark, Stephanie Lose, noted that the agreement is a historic reorganization and restructuring of land resources and food production in the country. A bill containing these changes must be approved by parliament, which is scheduled to take place after the summer recess.

Denmark is one of the world's leading exporters of pork and dairy products, and agriculture is projected to account for around 46% of the country's emissions by 2030. It is expected that the introduction of the tax will contribute to reducing the environmental impact of this key industrial sector, as well as contribute to the creation of more stable conditions for the balanced development of agricultural production in the future.
