Bilhorod-Dniester Sea Trade Port is preparing to become a key link in a new international transit route connecting Asian countries with the European Union. By the end of 2025, regular rail freight transport is planned to begin from here via the Romanian city of Galati, an important transport hub where one of the largest ports in Europe is located.
This was announced by the First Deputy Director of Bilhorod-Dniester Port, Igor Bilyk. According to him, the implementation of this project was made possible thanks to the large-scale reconstruction of the strategic railway section "Bender-Bessarabyaska-Etulia-Giurgiulesti" in the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
The total length of the route from Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi to Galati will be 320 km: 182 km of which run through the territory of Ukraine, 129 km through Moldova, and 9 km through Romania. This corridor should become an important element of the new freight transportation system in the region, which will contribute to strengthening trade and economic cooperation with the EU.
The modernization of 230 km of the railway track will cost 108 million euros. The project is being implemented with the financial support of the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The general contractor for the work was the Kazakh enterprise "Temirzhol Zhendeu" LLC, which is part of the "Qamkor Management" group of companies. The work started in 2022 and should be completed by the end of 2025.
Igor Bilyk noted that the infrastructure upgrade will allow lifting restrictions on the weight of goods and increasing the speed of trains to 90 km/h. This, in turn, will reduce the time for cargo delivery, improve transportation safety and create conditions for more efficient operation of the entire transport link.
The new railway artery is of great importance for the formation of a reliable transit route between Ukraine, Moldova and the European Union. It will open up new opportunities for exporters, ensure stable logistics connections in the region and contribute to the economic growth of the Black Sea region.
