Greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine are getting more expensive: what affects prices

18 мар, 18:07

Ukraine has seen an increase in prices for greenhouse tomatoes, which is associated with a decrease in supplies from Turkey. Over the past week, the cost of this vegetable has increased by an average of 13%, and compared to the same period last year, it has already increased by 22%.

According to EastFruit analysts, the tomato market has recently been facing reduced demand, which forced importers to reduce supplies. However, with the gradual recovery of purchasing activity, the shortage of products led to an inevitable increase in prices.

As of mid-March, greenhouse tomatoes are sold in Ukraine at a price of 85-95 UAH/kg ($2.05-2.29/kg). This is noticeably more expensive than in the same period last year, when the cost was almost a quarter lower.

Experts believe that the price increase may continue if the import situation does not stabilize in the near future. Turkey is one of the key suppliers of tomatoes to Ukraine, and any disruptions in logistics or export processes immediately affect pricing.

At the same time, Ukrainian greenhouse plants have not yet begun mass sales of their own products. According to preliminary forecasts, domestic producers will enter the market no earlier than mid-April, which may also affect further price fluctuations.

Thus, in the near future the cost of tomatoes in Ukraine will remain high, and further dynamics will depend on the resumption of imports and the start of sales of products of Ukrainian producers.
