Ukraine and China have signed a key agreement to boost Ukrainian agricultural exports to one of the world’s largest markets. The agreements concern the regulation of veterinary, sanitary and phytosanitary requirements for the supply of wild-caught aquatic bioresources and peas to the Chinese market.
This was reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
The agreement was signed by representatives of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Service for Food and Consumer Protection, Ukrainian agricultural associations and the General Customs Administration of the People’s Republic of China. The Chinese Embassy in Ukraine, headed by Ma Shenkun, played an important role in the negotiations.
Minister of Agrarian Policy Vitaly Koval emphasized that expanding cooperation with China is a strategically important step for the Ukrainian economy. According to him, entering the Chinese market opens up significant prospects for domestic agricultural producers, in particular due to the possibility of supplying quality products to one of the world's largest importers. The Minister also emphasized that this is the first major agreement between Ukraine and the PRC in the field of agricultural export in the last five years.
It is expected that the implementation of these agreements will contribute to the growth of agricultural exports. According to forecasts, pea production in Ukraine in the 2024/2025 marketing year may reach 476 thousand tons, and China, along with Turkey, India and Italy, will become one of the main importers of this product.
At the same time, Ukraine is increasing the volume of exports of aquatic bioresources. Industrial fish catch in 2024 increased by 6.2% compared to the previous year, and catch in international waters almost doubled, reaching 19.9 thousand tons. A significant increase in the value of fish exports was also recorded, which rose by 80.3% over the year and amounted to 56.3 million US dollars.
The concluded protocols continue the development of trade relations between Ukraine and China, which have been actively strengthening since 2019. It is expected that Ukrainian companies will soon begin supplying products in accordance with the new standards, which will contribute to the further development of economic partnership between the two countries.
