Onion prices in Ukraine are falling: why is the price of the vegetable falling

10 окт, 13:03

On the Ukrainian market, there is a decrease in onion prices due to an increase in supply. Farmers tend to sell products that are not suitable for long-term storage, which creates a surplus of goods on the market. This is reported by analysts of the EastFruit project.

Currently, the demand for onions is noticeably falling, while its supply continues to grow due to active harvesting in the central and western regions of the country. Farmers in these areas try to sell their products quickly to avoid spoilage.

Experts say that one of the main reasons for the price decrease is the appearance on the market of a large number of onions of medium and low quality. Adverse weather conditions in the summer months of this year had a negative impact on the quality of the harvest. In addition, prolonged rains during the onion harvest further worsened its condition, making the vegetables unsuitable for long-term storage.

With this in mind, farmers are forced to lower selling prices, trying to quickly sell perishable products. However, high-quality onions rarely appear on the market at the moment, as farmers have decided to put them in storage in anticipation of price increases.

According to EastFruit's daily price monitoring data, today wholesale batches of onions are sold at a price of 8 to 14 hryvnias per kilogram. This is 11% cheaper compared to the previous week.

Although prices have decreased, analysts note that the price of onions in Ukraine is still 15% higher than in the same period last year, which indicates a general trend towards higher prices of products against the background of an unstable market situation.
