Tomato prices in Ukraine fell by more than 20% in a week: Analysis of trends

05 авг, 13:08

During the current week (July 29 - August 2), a noticeable decrease in prices for greenhouse tomatoes was noted in Ukraine. In particular, prices for quality tomatoes fell to UAH 20-40 per kilogram ($0.49-0.97/kg), which is an average decrease of 22% compared to the end of the last working week (July 22 - July 26).

This was reported by the analysts of the EastFruit project, who indicated that the stabilization of the weather in many areas contributed to the recovery of the collection of ground tomatoes. Thanks to this, the collection campaign was resumed, which allowed to reduce the price of products.

Experts note that the harvesting of tomatoes is carried out in almost all regions of the country, but the demand for these products remains low due to problems with the quality of the product. Farmers indicate that unsatisfactory quality indicators have affected the decrease in demand from buyers.

Producers and wholesale companies attribute these difficulties to poor growing conditions. The hot and dry weather seriously damaged the plants: the fruits suffer from sunburn, cracks often appear, which significantly worsens the marketable appearance of the products.

Despite the fact that prices for greenhouse tomatoes are gradually decreasing, these products are currently 25% more expensive on the domestic market compared to last year. Ukrainian producers explain this as a general decrease in tomato production in the country, which affects market prices.

So, while the drop in tomato prices this week is a positive signal for consumers, quality issues and overall reduced production remain important factors affecting the market.
